EQ Cafe, Sharing Hope for Cancer Council

Some Mornings, the Coffee Means a Bit More

It starts like any other day, really. Doors open, the machine warms up, and there’s that familiar clatter of cups going down on tables, milk hissing away, people finding their usual spots. Someone orders their flat white. Someone else is grabbing a quick one before work, and a couple of mates duck in for a catch-up. For a few minutes, everything sort of slows down.

But this Daffodil Day, there’s something a little different about EQ Cafe. Sitting there amongst the coffee and the chatter and all the ordinary bits of the morning is a small yellow reminder of something much bigger. Hope, basically.

This year, that reminder carries a bit of extra weight — Daffodil Day 2026 falls on Thursday 20 August, and it marks 40 years of the campaign. We’re proud to get behind Cancer Council for it, giving everyone who comes through the door a chance to stop, learn a bit about the cause, and throw in a donation towards the work Cancer Council does. Because sometimes a small gesture ends up meaning a lot more than you’d think.

So Why Does Daffodil Day Matter?

Every August, Australians get together for the Daffodil Day Appeal — Cancer Council’s big fundraising campaign that goes towards life-saving cancer research. Over the years the daffodil has become a bit of a symbol of hope, and the shared effort to take some of the sting out of cancer for people right across the country.

Cancer doesn’t just affect the person who’s diagnosed. It changes family dinners. Weekend plans. Those quiet conversations you have late at night. Whole futures, sometimes. It brings uncertainty and hard days, but also this incredible courage and strength you don’t always expect.

Which is exactly why campaigns like Daffodil Day matter.

They pull people together around something we’re all hoping for, a future where cancer doesn’t take as much from Australian families as it does now.

Why We’re Doing It

We’re a cafe. Our thing is good coffee, delicious food and making your day a little better — but we’re also part of this community, and Daffodil Day felt like an easy way to give back. The daffodil’s a nice symbol for it, honestly. Bright, cheerful, pops up at the tail end of winter when everyone could do with a lift. It’s Cancer Council’s iconic yellow flower, and every August Aussies across the country get behind it. This year’s a big one, too — the campaign’s turning 40.

Drop in, grab your favourite coffee, have a bite, and take a moment for a cause that means a lot to a lot of Australians. No complicated forms, no big commitment, just a simple chance to give what you can. And whether it’s a little or a lot, deciding to get involved is part of a much bigger community effort.

A Splash of Yellow Around the Place

If you’ve been in lately, you might’ve noticed we’ve brightened things up a bit. There’s a fair bit of yellow about the cafe this August, and that’s no accident. It’s our nod to Daffodil Day and our way of flying the flag for Cancer Council through the month.

We like that it gives the place a bit of a lift, honestly. There’s something about a splash of yellow that just makes the joint feel cheerier, and it fits the season too, with the daffodils out and the weather starting to turn. It’s also a handy little conversation starter. Someone spots it, asks what’s going on, and next thing you know they’re keen to get involved too. Small thing, but that’s sort of how these things spread.

We’re In It With You

This isn’t one of those deals where the cafe just sticks up a poster and calls it a day. We’re properly in it. The whole team’s on board, and we’re doing our bit right alongside our regulars.

It matters to us for the same reason it matters to most people: nearly everyone’s got someone in their life who’s been through it, one way or another. So this isn’t us ticking a box. It’s a cause that hits close to home for plenty of us behind the counter too, and rallying our little corner of the community around it feels like the least we can do. When you get involved this month, you’re not doing it on your own. We’re right there with you.

The Kind of Thing That Sticks

Here’s what we love about a month like this. Long after the daffodils are gone and the yellow’s come down off the walls, the good you’ve done keeps ticking along quietly in the background. That’s the nice part. A bit of generosity now carries on well past the cup of coffee it came with.

You won’t see where it lands, and that’s alright. That’s a bit how kindness works. You put it out there and trust it does its job somewhere down the line. All we know is that every gesture from our lot this August adds up to a genuine hand for people who need one, and that’s a decent thing to be part of on your morning coffee run.
